Distributing matrices.-In order to increase the capacity of the machine, the distributor-bar is formed with two or more like releasing combinations, or sets of combinations, which are located at different points along the bar, and adjustable means is provided for causing the release of matrices by one or other of such combinations. The arrangement is particularly applicable to machines having main and auxiliary magazines arranged alongside one another, the distributor-bar being formed with two duplicate series of combinations, one for the main and one for the auxiliary magazine, so that the auxiliary magazine may contain a full set of characters. The auxiliary matrices are carried entirely across the first series of combinations by a pair of rails E, Fig. 2, formed on semi-tubular rods E', which partially encircle the upper distributor-screws D'. The rods E<1> are journaled at their ends, so that they can be rocked axially to move the rails E into or out of engaging relation with the upper ears of the' matrices. The rods E<1> are turned by toggle-mechanism, operated by a link G, which is connected to a finger-key, or they may be controlled automatically by the mechanical selection of the magazines, or by the matrices themselves, as they move on to or along the distributor-bar. The bar may have more than two series of combinations, in which case additional supporting-rails are provided. Assembling matrices.-The matrices from the main magazines A, Fig. 1, are conveyed to the assembler C by an inclined belt B, and those from the auxiliary magazines A<1> fall upon a separate inclined belt B<1>, from which they are delivered to the assembler by an intermediate horizontal belt B<2>.
