Abstract
339,491. Elkington, H. D., (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij). Dec. 6, 1929. Acetone; hydrogren.-Acetone and hydrogen are produced by passing isopropyl alcohol vapour, with or without admixture with other gases, through a liquid medium heated to a temperature between 300‹ and 700‹ C. The liquid medium may be a molten metal or alloy, especially molten lead, or molten salts or salt mixtures, e.g. mixtures containing, in molecular proportions, 1 BaCl2 + 1 CaCl2, 4 CaF, + 1 CaCl2, 1 MgCl2, + 2 KCl, 3 KCl + 1 CaCl2, 1 NaCl + 1 KCl The liquid medium selected should not attack the isopropyl alcohol or the acetone, nor should it promote undesirable side reactions such as coking. Contact of the vapours with iron should be avoided; the reaction vessel mav be made of or lined with copper or chromium or other non- ferrous metals or with other materials resistant to the action of isopropyl alcohol vapours. By suitable regulation of the gas velocity, almost complete conversion of the isopropyl alcohol may be effected. The outflowing gases are cooled, so that the acetone is condensed, and the hydrogen may be recovered separately. In the reaction. small amounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, unsaturated hydrocarbons, methane, and other hydrocarbons may be produced.
