Abstract

338,976. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Aug. 30, 1929. Shuttles.-Wooden shuttles for weaving are made by impregnating the wood before or after working with an indifferent solid chlorinated organic material. When the impregnating substance has a high melting point, it may be mixed with a lower melting addition as paraffin or mountain wax. Suitable substances are solid higher chlorinated hydrocarbons such as solid chlorinated naphthalenes with a chlorine content of 45-60 per cent and solid chlorinated diphenyl. In an example, ash is dried at 120‹ C., covered with melted chloronaphthalene, heated under pressure, and then worked up. Shuttles so made are stronger, have a smooth surface, are insensitive to moisture, and are of twice the weight of those made from the untreated wood. In another example, shuttles are made from horn beam treated with a wax prepared according to example 1 of Specification 309,421, [Class 22, Cements &c.]. Shuttles produced from very dense persimmon wood may also be improved by the impregnation. In another example, redbeech wood for making shuttles is introduced into twice its weight of molten chlorinated diphenyl in an autoclave which is then evacuated, the wood being removed while the diphenyl is still liquid.
