Abstract

Detachable installations. - Outboard motors with normally vertical power shaft and horizontal propeller shaft have supporting means connected with the boat and adapted to provide a universal movement of the motor or angular movement thereof in more than two planes or directions relative to the boat. The installation, while supported in the ordinary way for steering and for tilting on striking an obstruction, is also capable of being turned in a transverse plane. The construction is also adapted for changing the distance from the supporting bracket to the propeller. On the main bracket 55 which is secured to the boat is a pivoted arm 54 carrying a circular flange 57 which has cut-away portions 58. Coacting therewith is a disc 59 formed at its upper and lower edges a channel projection 60 recessed at 61 to receive the unnotched portions of the disc 57 for assembling and dismantling, and when turned through an angle become operatively locked by a spring pressed plunger 66. The plunger knob 68 has a tongue 72 matching a recess for supporting the plunger in its operative and inoperative positions. Additional positive locking may be effected by a stud 94. The supported disc 59 is integral with a. half sleeve, 49 which together with the half sleeve 48 fit between flanges 45, 46 on the depending tube 38 and so supports the assembly. The installation may tilt about the axis 56 in the propeller striking an obstruction, it may be turned in the bearings 48, 49 for steering and in addition as a result of the bayonet type disc mounting may be swung transversely. The centre of the disc 59 is not in line with centre of length of the sleeve 49 so that by turning the disc through 180‹ the sleeve 49 and thus the propeller is raised relative to the boat. In a modification, Fig. 12, the discs are plain and held by a ring 96 and studs 97, the latter being slacked off when adjustment is being made for transverse swinging. The two discs may be replaced by bosses held together by a central stud with or without positive locking means. The discs 108, 109, Fig. 16, are mounted on the main bracket and carry the pivot 111 for the supporting arm 113.
