Winding-machines; threadguides.-A drum winding-machine for cops, bobbins, packages, coils, &c. of yarn, thread, wire, &c. has a cam 55 mounted to tilt about an axis crossing that of its rotation to vary the throw of the cam and thus of the length of traverse of the thread guide. The variation may be automatic, and effected according to the diameter of the yarn package to produce packages conical at both ends, or it may be manual to produce packages having layers of windings of equal, predetermined length. The cop C is wound by the drum 20 on to a tube T rotatably mounted in gudgeons 25 which are held by springs 35, Fig. 2, in bushes 29 in which they are positioned eccentrically to allow adjustment of the cop axis, the brakes being carried by arms 32 pivoted at 33 on the machine frame. As the cop builds, these arms are raised and operate mechanism for tilting the cam 55 which is roated on a stationary shaft 7 by the gearing shown, and pivotally mounted at 66, Fig. 3. In the form shown the tilting is effected by a rod 105 adjustably screwed to one of the arms 32 and bushed in a lug 96 of a plate 95 with ears 98 working in grooves 99. The plate 95 engages a peripheral groove in a sleeve 90 on the cam shaft 7, the sleeve being formed with an arm 91 having holes 92 for a bolt 82 which connects it with a slotted arm 84 on the cam-rim. For a given movement of the sleeve 90 the amount of tilt imparted to the cam 55 varies according to which of the holes 92 the bolt 82 is in, the mechanism thus constituting a means of controlling the angle of the conical ends of the cop C. A shaped roller 60 engaging the cam groove 59 is mounted on a spring plunger 61 on a carriage 41 on guide rails 42, 43 to which is pivoted at 47 the thread guide arm 40, carrying a helical wire guide 52 and a porcelain button 50 which rests on the cop surface and moves outwards as the cop increases in size. Manual variation of the cam tilt is effected by changing the bolt 82 to a different hole, the sleeve 90 being substituted by one which is rotatable on the shaft 7, and which -is adjustably positioned thereon.
