Abstract

337,479. McLaughlin, F. Aug. 6, 1929. Artificial bait; spinning tackle.-The hook of a fishing bait on being released from its retaining notch is rotated about its shank as axis and assumes a position with the bait exposed. A wobbling device 14 which extends rearwards and downwards is mounted on the front of the bait by various arrangements which permit of a movement of less than one complete revolution. In Fig. 1 the hook is carried in bearing members 4, 5, and a spring 6, attached to the hook and to the member 4, rotates the hook on its release. Alternatively, the spring 6 may be attached to the bait and a projection 9 on the hook which is provided to limit its rotation. In Fig. 4 the rotation is effected by a spring plunger. The plunger stem 11, which is rockable relative to its head 12, is connected to an offset portion 10 of the hook. With the construction shown in Fig. 6 an outward swing of the hook occurs as well as the rotation. A spring 21 carries a plunger 22, which a. spring 24 tends to expel from the recess 23. The end 20 of the shank is hingedly connected to a loop which passes into a hole 18 and is fixed over a brace 19 carrying a wobbler 14. In order to swing the hook, a weight, or the resiliency of the hook itself, may be substituted. In a modification, the hook is mounted on a swinging frame carried under the body. The hook may also be mounted so as to be pulled free of the body when it is released by either attaching it to the main line or to a short fine line wound round the body. The notch for the hook, which also acts as a shield, may be formed in the body of the bait or by a tube projecting from the body, or on a spring passing across the body. The hook may be constructed in two sections connected by a sleeve and the bait may be replaced by a spoon, or a spoon 29 may be attached as shown. A diving device may also be attached to the bait.
