Abstract

337,017. Commercial Alcohol Go., Ltd., Arthur, J. S., and Gogarten, R. April 20, 1929. Glucose &c.-Cellulosic substances which have a low water content or which have been dried down to a low water content such as 10 per cent or less, are subjected to treatment in the following steps :-(1) treatment with steam until they have a moisture content of between, about 20 to 40 per cent; (2) subjecting to the action of hydrochloric acid gas under cooling until decomposition is effected; (3) without removing the hydrochloric acid introducing steam or a mixture of steam and inert gas to saccharify the products of decomposition. The vessel is preferably heated to from 60‹ to 70‹ C. during the saccharification. The materials may be subjected to cooling and to reduced pressure during the moistening, and the hydrochloric acid for the decomposition may be introduced under normal or increased pressure. The product of the saccharification is dried down by the application of reduced pressure, and the residue may then be lixiviated, and the solution so obtained subjected to hydrolysis by means of steam and hydrochloric acid to convert the sugars to monoses.
