Abstract
336,555. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Fitzgerald, A. S. May 14, 1029. Separating by electrical apparatus controlled by selenium and like cells.-In apparatus for sorting articles in accordance with their colour values of the kind in which the articles are exposed to light, the reflection of which is caused to fall on a photo-electric cell associated with a device responsive to the changes of current in the circuit including the photo-electric cell for selectively moving the articles, the output of the cell is amplified by a grid-controlled arc discharge device such as is described in Specification 223,921, [Class 40 (v), Wireless signalling &c.]. In the embodiment described the articles, such as beans, are delivered in small quantities from a hopper 6 on to a rotating disc 2 and into a tapering channel formed by two curved strips 8, 9 so that they are arranged in line and passed at intervals through a spot, of light 15 cast by a lamp. The reflected light falls on photo-electric cells 16 in circuit with the amplifying device 24 and an electromagnet 19 adapted to actuate a spring- controlled push bar 21 or release an air-jet to move articles not conforming to a required standard from their normal path to a bin 14 into a path leading to another bin 13. Preferably the device is adjusted so that the articles moved belong ta the class having the smaller number. The electromagnet. 19 is in the output circuit of the amplifier 24 which is a gas filled arc-discharge device energized by a source 25 of alternating current. The discharge takes place only when the plate 28 is positive, and the point in the cycle at which the discharge begins is controlled by the voltage on the grid 27 connected to the anode of the cells 16. The voltage across the cells is derived from a tapping on the shunt resistance 33 through the auto-transformer 30. The grid is also initially biassed by connection through the resistance 35 to a tap on another shunt resistance 34. The operating-voltage on the grid is adjusted, for setting the apparatus, by varying the positions of the taps 33. 34.
