Abstract
336,507. Beaumont, J. H., (Kroydon Co.). Jan. 3, 1930. Tubes of varying diameter such as golf club shafts are formed by a rotary swaging device of which the inward movement of the strikers towards the tube axis is varied automatically in predetermined ratio to the passage of the tube under the strikers, the tube being preferably supported at the swaging point by a taper mandrel movable to vary the internal diameter of the tube. The tube 11 is clamped to a carriage 2 traversed by a feed screw 3 operated by a worm gear 61 from a shaft 52 driven by a pulley 51. The strikers 23 of the rotary swaging head are mounted in transverse slots in a plate at the end of the shaft 18 and are connected by grooves and tongues to wedge shaped anvils 22 which contact with the rollers 15 in the stationary ring 14 as the shaft 18 rotates, the anvils 22 being movable longitudinally by rods 27 to vary the inward movement of the strikers. This variation is effected automatically as the tube advances by a collar 30 secured to the rods 27 and having a groove 42 engaged by a projection 41 on a slide 39 actuated by a cam groove 50 in a drum cam 45, which has a second cam groove 48 actuating another slide 38 having a projection 44 engaging a groove 43 in a collar 36 secured to the end of the mandrel 35. The cam 45 is slowly rotated by a worm wheel 66 and worm 65 on a shaft 64 geared to the shaft 52 and by suitably shaping the grooves 48, 50 to correlate the movements of the slide 2, mandrel 35 and striker adjusting rods 27, any desired internal and external taper may be given to the tube 11. The tube is rotated during its travel by mounting the holder 12 on a shaft 74 fitted with an angled gear wheel 73 engaging a rack 75. The working faces 241 of the strikers are convex transversely and longitudinally.
