Abstract

335,611. India Rubber, Gutta Percha, &. Telegraph Works Co., Ltd., and Avery, W. L. June 28, 1929. Addition to 309,470. Fluid-pressure.-The apparatus of the parent Specification comprising two brakes or two sets of brakes connected to two fluid containing chambers having pistons or the like controlled by a single operating rod capable of two movements one of which causes equal application of the brakes while the other causes differential application, is modified in that one of the movements of the rod is transverse to its longitudinal axis and the other movement is a rotation about that axis. The cylinders 10, 11 are disposed side by side and each has a piston 12 having a projection 21 loosely fitting into a tubular-member 22 of circular bore and square external section, a vertical pin 23 securing the parts for endwise movement but allowing the member 22 to adjust itself laterally. Toothed racks 24 are formed on each member 22 and engage a toothed wheel 28, the members being guided by vertical rollers 26, 27 and horizontal plates 19, 20. Flared holes 29, 30 in the toothed wheel are engaged by the forked end 31 of the operating rod 32 extending upwardly through longitudinal slots in the plate 19 into a casing 33 of oval section mounted in bearings 38. The rod is rotatable in the casing 33, and at its upper end is provided with a handle; rotation of the rod moves the pistons oppositely to give differential braking while swinging of the rod and casing 33 about the pivots 38 moves the pistons together for equal braking. Tubes 40, 41 connect each of the cylinders with the brakes and with a liquid supply respectively, the tube 41 being normally closed by spring-pressed cone valve 42 the stem 43 of which extends through a central aperture 44 in the piston 12 into a bore 45 in the projection 21 and has an enlargement 46 so that when the piston is near its extreme rearward position the valve 42 is lifted to replenish the cylinder as described in Specification 340,222, [Group XXXIV]. The rod 32 may be universally mounted by means of a flexible disc fixed to the toothed wheel. The pistons may face in opposite directions so that rotation of the rod gives equal brake application and transverse movement differential application. The cylinders may be arranged end to end. The operation rod may be cranked and in the case of an aeroplane connected to the usual control rod for operation thereby. The pistons may be replaced by flexible diaphragms, and suction may be used instead of fiuid pressure.
