Abstract

Worm pumps. - A mud gun C for plugging blast-furnace tapping-holes comprises a pair of screw conveyers 61, 62 disposed within a barrel 55 which is formed with a tapered discharge nozzle 56 and a mud hopper 59, 69. The screws 61, 62 are driven in opposite directions by a motor 74, Fig. 2, mounted on the gun, the drive being transmitted by pinions 73, 72 to the shaft 71 of one conveyer and thence to the other screw by the inter-engaging pinions 75, 76. To prevent back flow through the barrel 55, the upper and lower walls of the latter are formed with wedge-shaped projections 65, 66 which extend between the screws, and the forward end wall of the hopper portion 59 is of V-formation, as shown in Fig. 7, to provide two faces 64a parallel to the webs 63, 64 of the respective screws. The gun is mounted on the swinging carriage described in Specification 335,212, [Class 51 (ii), Furnaces and kilns for applying &c.].
