Abstract

334,701. Finley, S. E. Aug. 28, 1920. Surface-levelling machines; surface treatment with liquid materials; tar-macadam, plant for making.-Road-surfacing compositions are prepared in situ by continuously lifting and tumbling the aggregate laterally above the road surface by inclined scraper-like elements and spraying the aggregate with a binder during its lateral movement. In the machine shown, front and rear inclined blades 11, 11' are supported at their ends by pivoted arms 10, 10<1> connected to hand gears 14, 14<1> for separately adjusting the ends of each blade, the said gears being mounted on a platform 3 at the rear of a vehicle carrying a tank 1 for the binder. The blades are furnished with renewable cutting edges 12, 12<1> which enable them to penetrate the road surface and raise and tumble the aggregate, which passes along the blade 11 until it is picked up by an adjustable extension 11<a> on the blade 11' along which it returns to be left in a ridge at the side of the road. Spray pipes 22, 23 are fitted in front of each of the blades so that the aggregate is covered with the binder whilst being turned over by the blades. The method may be applied to the treatment of existing roads or to the preparation of new bituminous concrete.
