Abstract

334,698. Hipple, H., Funk, F., and Vatter, J. Aug. 28, 1929. Milling-machines. - A machine for drilling, milling, or punching dies, matrices, stamps, plates &c., comprises a movable templet or pattern table and a feeler which is fixed in a position abutting the templet and serves as a gauge for positioning the work table for the drilling or punching of the corresponding part of the work. The frame 1 is provided with guides 2 for a carriage 3 which is fitted with a cross slide 5 carrying a work table 6 and a templet table 7, the two tables being rotatable in unison by worm gears operated :from a hand wheel 11. The cross slide is traversed by a screw 17 rotated step by step from a cam 22 acting through pawl and ratchet gearing 19, shaft 13 and worm gear 14. The tool 26, driven from a pulley 27, is mounted in an overhanging arm 25 and is fed by means of a pivoted lever 33 operated from a cam 38 through links 35, 37. A sliding member 41 is guided for horizontal movement by rollers 39 on the frame and the arm 40 of this member is fitted with an adjustable cross slide 43 carrying the tracer 45 engaging the templet 88. A spring 47 normally urges the member 41 to the right, Fig. 1. The lower arm 48 of the member 41 is engageable by a brake lever 51 which is operated when required by a cam 56 on the main cam shaft. A horizontal bar 57, guided by a pin 59 of the frame and by a groove 60 in the carriage 3 carries a spring 62 engageable with the member 41 and may be traversed against a strong spring 64 by a bell-crank lever 66 actuated by a cam 71. The normal position of this bar is determined by a rocking member 73 which may be moved by a cam 75 into engagement with a V-notch in the bar. The bar may also be locked to the carriage 3 by a brake 78 actuated by a cam 83 and the carriage itself may be locked by a brake 87 actuated by a cam 84. In operation the carriages are adjusted until the tracer engages one corner of the pattern. The tracer is then shifted through a distance equal to one of the feed steps of the cross slide 5 and the machine started. While the tool is drilling a hole in the work 90, the bar 57 is moved to the right, allowing the spring 47 to engage the tracer with the templet. The member 41 is then locked by the brake 51 and the arm 57 moved back by the spring 64 until the arm 61 engages member 41. In this position the carriage is locked to the bar 57 whereupon the member 41 is unlocked and the tracer withdrawn by the spring 62. The drill is then withdrawn, the carriage released by the brake 87 and the carriage set for the next operation by engaging the bar 73 with its notch, thus shifting bar 57 and the tables by an amount dependent on the tracer position. The cross feed of the tables is then effected, the carriage re-locked by the brake 87 and unlocked from the bar 57 which is then reset by another engagement of the tracer with the templet while another hole is drilled. After making the first hole the drill is replaced by an end milling cutter and the required outline 91 oi the work is obtained from a number of overlapping holes as shown in Fig. 10. When a bend such as 92 is reached, the tables may be rotated through the required angle in readiness for a traverse to the next bend. In some cases the tracer may be arranged for vertical copying movements instead of the horizontal movements above described. Also the hand wheel 11 may be replaced by automatic table-rotating means.
