Abstract

333,755. Pollock, A. F., and Pollock, D. A. Aug. 28, 1929. Records, magnetic and electromagnetic; duplicating.-Magnetic material, constituting a phonogram. is drawn magnetically from a master tape or surface b to which it has been applied on to another tape or surface c. The master tape b, carrying the phonogram on its undersurface, is drawn over the north pole N of a magnet NS which is disposed flush with the surface of a non-magnetic table top a. A paper or other non-magnetic tape c, coated on its upper face with an adhesive, is interposed between the phonogram and the magnet NS and travels conjointly with the master tape b. The master tape b isdiverted around a roller d away from the magnet. The tape c is subsequently diverted from the magnet by a roller e, and between the rollers d, e another paper tape f is diverted by a roller g on to the tape c so as to constitute a protective covering for the transferred phonogram. The. master' tape may be of copper or other non-magnetic material having the magnetic material filled into etched recesses representing the sound characteristics, and such master record may be used repeatedly by refilling the recesses with magnetic material after each transfer operation. Alternatively, the magnetic material may be applied to the master tape in thicknesses varying according to the sound characteristics. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of a horseshoe magnet for transferring the phonogram from the master tape.
