Abstract
333,320. Broughton, H. H. May 22, 1929. Dams and retaining-walls. - A dam or like structure comprises a monolithic wall built upwards on a subaqueous foundation, and formed of concrete or like material with a number of vertical cells which afterwards are filled with rubble, earth, or other filling..Figs. 2 and 9 show a dam wall with a row of vertical cells 4 filled with rubble or earth &c. ; on each side is a sloping bank 6. In a modification, Fig. 4, several rows of cells 4 are arranged close together, suitably filled with rubble &c. 5, and protected on only one side by a bank 6. The walls of cells 4 may be straight or curved, and the cells 4 may be arranged in echelon or otherwise. The cells are preferably circular in horizontal section, and supplementary triangular-section or like cells may be arranged between them. The upper part of the dam may have overflow gaps 7, Fig. 4, or sluices with valves. The wall is conveniently built by means of moulds which are gradually raised as the various sections are cast. Across the top of the moulds may be laid rails 9 for tip-trucks 10, which are filled, by means of skip hoist 12 and a W- section hopper 13, with material delivered through a tunnel 14, afterwards filled, with concrete &c.
