Abstract

332,977. Dicker, S. G. S., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). May 13, 1929. Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-A device for irradiating liquids with ultra-violet rays comprises a discharge chamber, having a helical or other tortuous shape, located within and seated to an irradiation chamber. In the construction shown, the discharge chamber comprises a tube 1, made of quartz or other material transparent to ultra-violet rays, which is sealed at its ends to electrode chambers 2, 3. A graded seal may be employed between the tube and the eletrode chambers when these are formed of different materials. An incandescent cathode 4, and anodes 8, 9, are mounted within the electrode chambers 2, 3 respectively, a screen 13 being arranged between the anodes. A mixture of a metallic vapour and a gas, such as mercury vapour and argon, is contained within the discharge chamber. The irradiation chamber is formed by a tube 14 which preferably consists of a material opaque to ultra-violet rays, such as ordinary glass, the tube being sealed to the electrode chambers 2, 3. The liquid to be irradiated enters and leaves the device by tubes 15, 16, sealed to the irradiation chamber.
