Abstract
332,756. Elkington, H. D., (Naamlooze Vennootschap de Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij). Aug: 1, 1929. Right to Patent relinquished. Aliphatic ethers; propylene.-The manufacture, of aliphatic ethers by heating aliphatic alcohols, containing at least two carbon atoms in the molecule, under pressure in the presence of a dehydration catalyst is effected at a temperature not exceeding 400‹ C. and preferably below 300‹ C. The catalyst may be a compound of aluminium or thorium, e.g. aluminium oxide or sulphate, or thorium oxide. The reaction may be carried out by passing the alcohol at the necessary temperature and pressure into an apparatus containing the catalyst, and condensing the issuing gases; alternatively, a closed reaction vessel may be used. Examples are given describing the manufacture of diethyl ether, dipropyl ether (with some propylene), di-isopropl ether, dibutyl ether, and di-isobutyl ether from the corresponding alcohols under the conditions described above.
