Abstract

Optical apparatus and records; soundreproducing apparatus with kinematographs. -Relates to apparatus for recording on, or reproducing from, a sound film in which the mean path of the sound trace is in the form of a plurality of lines running substantially parallel to one another and approximately transverse to the length of the film. According to the invention, the apparatus comprises a rotary drum 4, having a substantially helical slot 5, a screen 8 located within the drum and having a slit 9 substantially equal in length to the length of the drum and parallel to the axis thereof, and means for projecting light from within the drum. The emergent light proceeds through the area at which the drum slot 5 crosses the screen slit 9 and is caused to sweep from end to end of the drum in a continuous succession of unidirectional movements. The drum is provided with a reflector system 6 co-operating with end lamps and reflectors. The drum 4 is .rotated through a shaft 10 and gearing 11, 11<a> from a drum 3 on to which the sound film 1 is wound from a drum 2. During reproduction, the light from the slot 5 passes through a lens system 12, the film 1, a lens system 13, and a transverse slit 15 in a screen 14 as shown in Fig. 2, and then falls upon a mirror 16 whence it is reflected upon a photoelectric cell 17 feeding an amplifier 18, and loudspeaker 19. During recording, a light valve 21, 21<a>, for example an acoustically-vibrated graded light filter, is energized from an amplifier 22 as shown in Fig. 4, and the light beam passes through a transverse slit 27 and lens 25. If desired, instead of the light relay 21, 21a, the necessary modulation of light may be obtained by varying the intensity of the source or sources of light within the drum 4 A kinematograph projector may be geared with the above apparatus when used for reproduction.
