Abstract

Multiplying-apparatus.-In a machine with a laterally movable totalizer carriage the multiplication process is effected automatically according to the digits of the previously set multiplier factor through an electrical circuit arrangement including adjustable contact devices controlling the rotations of the main shaft and the carriage shift mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1 the machine comprises a multiplicand setting mechanism, 1 and a multiplier setting means 2 the latter being represented as slides 3, Fig. 2, with toothed racks engaging pinions 4. Each pinion 4 carries a contact 5, which in the normal zero position of the slides, engages a contact 6, the contact 6 being pressed into engagement therewith by a stop 8 on a ratchet wheel 7. The contacts 5 as shown in Fig. 4 are electrically connected to contact plates 9, the left hand plate being connected to the units denomination contact and so on. The contact plates 9 are formed of two parts and the second part of each plate is connected to a corresponding electromagnet 21 adapted to actuate the ratchet wheels 7. The contacts 6 are connected over a relay 12 to a starting switch 13 and the armature 14 of the relay co-operates with one or other of a pair of contacts in circuit respectively with an electromagnet 15 adapted to operate the carriage shift mechanism and with an electromagnet 17 adapted to operate the clutch 23 to connect the motor shaft 24 to the main shaft 19. The two part contacts 9 are engaged by a contact member 11 on the carriage of the machine, and the shafts 19,24 are provided with cam, members 18, 25 to close momentarily contacts 20, 16 in the circuits of the electromagnets 21, 15 respectively. After setting the factors, in which operation the contacts 5 have been displaced with respect to the contacts 6, the switch 13 is closed and current flows through the magnet 17 to drive the shaft 19. At each revolution the units denomination magnet. 21 is energized to rotate the ratchet wheel 7 and advance the contact 6 until it again meets the set contact 5 whereupon the magnet 12 is energized and prepares a circuit through the magnet 15 which circuit is completed when the contacts 16 are closed, thus causing a step movement of the carriage. The process is repeated in each denomination until the carriage reaches the end of its travel at which position the contact 11 opens the switch 13. The slides 3 may be reset at the end of an operation by freeing them from the pinions 4 or by means adapted to free the pawls 22 and return the pinions 4 and ratchet wheels 7.
