Abstract
331,265. Johnson, J. Y., (1. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 23, 1929. Caoutchouc, synthetic; polymerization products of styrol, indene, and vinyl bromide.-In the polymerization of liquid distillable materials, e.g. butadiene, isoprene, dimethylbutadiene, vinyl bromide, styrol, and indene, the chamber in which the polymerizing agent is contained is combined with a compensating chamber not containing such agent into which the liquid may distil on the occurrence of a violent reaction and from which it may be returned on the cessation of the violent reaction. As shown in Fig. 2, butadiene and sodium are introduced into a rotary cylinder A immersed in a water-bath and communicating with a compensating cylinder C immersed in a second water-bath, the temperatures of the baths being maintained at about 40‹ C. The butadiene may also be charged into the compensating chamber and allowed to distil into the polymerizing chamber. In a modification a tubular condenser B is combined with the polymerizing chamber A immersed in a bath HI, the distilled liquid passing to a receiver C from which it is returned to the chamber A. The temperature of the condenser water is kept a little above that of the bath H1.
