Abstract

330,541. Brown, S. G. March 8, 1929. Gyroscopic compasses.- In a directional instrument of the kind described in Specification 270,006 in which the movements of a North-seeking and of a static gyro-compass are so combined that the errors of each are neutralized, there is applied to the element of the mechanism under the control of the North-seeking compass an additional correcting movement to compensate for the North-steaming error under given conditions. The screwed spindles 1, 2 operated by step-by-step motors 3, 4 controlled respectively by the North-seeking and static gyros, both engage a worm-wheel 5 on a frame 6 which may carry a recording pen 7. To produce the desired connection the motor 3 is geared to a disc 11 carrying a pin 12 engaging in a slot 13 in a sleeve 14 loosely mounted on the spindle 1 and prevented from axial movement thereon by suitable collars, so that rotation of the disc 11 causes axial movement of the spindle with consequent rotation of the worm-wheel 5. The distance of the pin 12 from the centre of the disc 11 can be adjusted by a rack and pinion 17, 18 according to existing conditions of speed and latitude, the pinion 18 being set either manually or by a step-by-step motor.
