330,317. Siemens - Schuckertwerke Akt.-Ges., Gutmann, V., and Steiner, L. March 14, 1929. Sampling liquids.- For taking samples of petroleum from predetermined depths in bore holes, the closing valves 6, 7 of a chamber 5 are controlled electromagnetically. The armature 15 of the solenoid 14, which is energized from the surface through conductors traversing the cable 2, is carried on a lever pivoted directly on or geared to the valve spindle 6. The two valves are connected by a rod 12 which passes through a pipe hermetically sealed to the end faces of the chamber 5. In a modification the armature of the electromagnet, at the required instant, trips the valve lever, which is then pulled over by a weight in the lower part of the casing first opening and then reclosing the valves; abrupt action is prevented by a dash-pot. The cable 2 is unwound from a winch on which is a device for measuring the distance. An electric motor may replace the magnet.
