Abstract

330,106. Tate, W. R., Stephenson, H. P., Dean, H. P., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. May 9, 1929. Accumulators and intensifiers.-A method of releasing the pressure of mixtures of solids and liquids under high pressures, where.by the use of reducing 'valves which are subject to erosion is avoided, consists in transferring the potential energy of said mixture to a fluid whose energy can be released in any known manner without erosion. The mixture under high pressure is stored in a vessel 1 and passes through a pipe 2 and an inlet valve 3 to the cylinder 4 of a ram 5, the piston 6 of which acts also in the cylinder 11 of a second ram 10 of larger diameter than the first ram 5, and is reciprocated between the two rams according to the positions of the valves 3, 7, 12 and 13 which control the inlet and outlet of the main and auxiliary fluids. Auxiliary low pressure liquid is pumped, by means of a pump 18 through an accumulator 14, a pipe 15, and inlet valve 12 to the cylinder 11. The exhaust from the cylinder 4 passes through the valve 7 and pipe 8 to a low pressure storage vessel 9 for further use, and the exhaust from cylinder 11 passes through a valve 13, a regulating valve 17, a pipe 16, and an accumulator 19 to a point where its energy may be released in any known manner. In the position shown, valves 3, 13 are open and valves 7, 12 are closed, the cylinder 4 is charged with the high pressure mixture and the cylinder 11 is empty. Valves 3, 13 now close and valves 7, 12 open, low pressure fluid thus entering the cylinder 11 and forcing the piston 6 upwards to discharge the contents of the cylinder 4 at low pressure into the storage vessel 9. At the end of the stroke the valves 3, 13 open and valves 7, 12 close, the high pressure mixture forcing the auxiliary liquid out to the accumulator 19, the speed of operation of the apparatus being regulated by the valve 17, and the cycle of operations being repeated at the end of the stroke. The movements of the valves 3, 7. 12 and 13 are coordinated by means of an independent timing device not described.
