Abstract

329,030. Sproul, J., and Sproul, J. O. Feb. 15, 1929. Inclined-trough and endless-belt wet-separating apparatus.-An endless conveyer on which the material to be separated, is subjected to the action of jets of washing water is constructed of skips of scoop-like configuration having inclined bottoms so shaped that the longitudinal section of the material in a. filled skip is approximately wedgeshaped, the apex being the leading edge, the rearend of the skip being curved to form a dam. Skips A with sloping bottoms a<1> are articulated together by transverse bars b<1> which pass through the rear portion of the sides a5 of a skip and the front overlapping portion a5<1> of the sides of the following skip, the rear end a4 of the preceding skip and the front a2 of the following skip being formed to overlap the transverse, bar to prevent leakage at the joints. The transverse bars b' terminate in rollers B which travel in guides C attached to the sides of a trough D. The material to be separated is supplied from a hopper E with a rotatable pocketed feed cylinder e<1>, and water is supplied from a tank F through pipes f<1>, f<3> leading respectively to the bottom of the hopper E and to an adjustable hopper f<5>. The skips forming the endless conveyer are driven by one or more pairs of sprocket wheels S mounted on a shaft S1, the arms S4 of the wheels engaging with the transverse bars b<1>. The water carries the lighter materials in a direction opposite to the direction of motion of the conveyer, and the light material is removed by a conveyer H working in a perforated casing through which the water drains back into the trough D, from which it is conveyed by a pump P to the tank F. The heavy material is trapped by the rear ends a4 of the scoop-shaped skips and discharged by the conveyer K. The trough with the conveyer &c. is hinged about the centre of the driving sprocket wheel so that its inclination can be adjusted. The angle of slope of the bottom of the skips is varied according to the relative specific gravities of the constituents of the mixture to be separated, and the depth and length of the skips according to the size of the particles being treated.
