Abstract

Tubes.-Return bends of short radius in tubes are made by upsetting the portion to be bent, and then bending it round a convexly-curved grooved member on a mandrel which is gradually withdrawn. A heated tube 5 is first placed in a split die 1, 2 with an enlarged groove 4 into which it is upset by an hydraulic ram 7, the tube being supported by a mandrel 6. The operation may be effected in stages with dies having successively layer grooves. The tube is then secured by a clamp 10 to a rotatable grooved former 8 and is placed over a mandrel 15 fixed to a bracket 16<1>. with one side against a grooved member 13 slidable in a fixed bracket 12. The mandrel has a bevelled end 16 so as to fit the inside surface of the tube as it is being bent. Slight flattening of the tube during bending may be removed by pressing in a split die.
