Abstract

328,516. Ripley, R. R., and Schwarz, S. C. July 29, 1929. Tar.-In the recovery of tars from their aqueous emulsions, a relatively small proportion of a demulsifying agent, such as a water-soluble alkali, is added, and the mixture is rapidly heated to boiling under atmospheric pressure to assist in the intermixture of the ingredients. Heating is continued to a higher temperature under increasing pressure to prevent vaporization and at a point below cracking until the water particles reach the desired coalescence, when heating is discontinued and pressure gradually released to allow separation of the tar into a distinct layer. A settling period of 12 to 36 hours is stated to separate the more stubborn emulsions. Caustic soda solution is mentioned as a demulsifying agent and the quantity specified is approximately six-hundredths of one per cent by weight of caustic to tar emulsion. Maximum temperature and pressure specified are approximately 320‹ F. and 75 lbs. per sq. in. gauge pressure. The apparatus comprises a container a, preferably a horizontal cylindrical boiler of 5,000 gallons capacity, connected to tanks k and l containing emulsion and demulsifying agent respectively by a common pipe m<2>, and to outlets w, x by pipe v. Steam coils c in the bottom of the container heat the emulsion. A number of test outlets r<1> to r<10> are provided, and the condition of the emulsion is judged by drawing off samples at different levels.
