Casings. - The outer protective casing of a vacuum-jacketed glass bottle, jug, food-jar &c. is composed of a moulded phenol-aldehyde condensation product, such as bakelite, which may be suitably coloured before moulding. For non- cylindrical vessels, such as the vessel 23 shown, the casing may be formed in sections 10, 12, 13 having co-operating screw threads 16, 17 and 18, 21 moulded in the material. The sections may be secured together by an ordinary threaded metal ring, but preferably the member shown in Fig. 2 is used. It consists of a brass or other metal strip 24 with flanged edges 25, 26, the ends of the strip being connected by a riveted &c. tongue 27 to form a ring with the flanges offset so as to form a single screw thread. This member is screwed into the threads of one section before the other section is threaded on to it. The top section 13 has an inturned flange 20 against which the mouth 22 of the vessel is forced upwards to make a tight joint by a cushioning pad 36 carried by a screwed plug 31 threaded into the bottom of the lowest section of the casing. In the case of a jug, a lip 19 is moulded in the top section, and a handle 38 of metal or of the same material as the casing is attached to the middle section by bolts 39. The sections may have internal and external moulded threads for direct engagement, instead of by a connecting ring. For straight walled vessels the casing may be in one piece.
