Fencing.-Droppers for wire fencing are made by crimping or notching or both crimping and notching the parts of a wire for forming the legs J, Fig. 11, but leaving uncrimped the part for forming the head K then bending this part while cold to make the parts J lie together and finally cold working the head K to cause the legs J to make close contact with the notches or crimps (if any) in register. Galvanised hard-drawn or high-tensile steel wire is run continuously through built-up crimping and notching rolls A, B, Fig. 1, with teeth E of high-tensile steel, about 18 inches in diameter, so that lengths of crimped wire for two legs J are separated by uncrimped parts for the heads which may have a locating notch L. This wire is cut up and each length is clamped by a finger i, Fig. 6, operated by a treadle j, against a former b and bent by members c, d carried by worm wheels s rotated by worms p, q, gears m, and reversing bevel gearing n from a belt pulley f. The pulley shaft h drives a cam 1, through worm and chain gearing v, w, which operates the reversing gearing n to cause the benders c, d to return when they have reached the position shown in broken lines and to pause, when they have returned to the initial position, to allow the insertion of another wire. A wheel e may be used to adjust the position of the benders c, d, by hand. The head K is flattened and then elongated by a block 18, Fig. 9, and pin 19 which are reciprocated through a small distance by linkwork 16 and a cam 11 rotated by worm gear 9. The dropper is held during this operation by spring-pressed clamps 20 which can be opened through linkwork by a treadle 21. If desired the head may first be elongated and then flattened.
