Abstract

327,118. Mraz, J. L. Dec. 22, 1928. Sleeve couplings. - The adjacent ends of two wires, rods, &c., 5, 5, Fig. 2, such as electric conductors, or tension wires of aeroplanes, are connected by inserting said ends into a metal sleeve 1, which is of circular cross-section and is provided with a bore 2 of slightly larger diameter than the wires, and then compressing the sleeve by means of the dies 6, 6, Fig. 3, which are advanced step by step along the entire length of the sleeve. Each die is constituted by a block provided with a straight groove 7, Fig. 4, in the form of an arc of a size slightly less than a semi-circle and of a radius slightly less than that of the tube or sleeve 1, so that when pressure is first applied to the tube 1 by the dieedges 8 the said tube will be compressed in the direction of the line x, Fig. 5, and forced against the enclosed wire at diametrically opposite points. Continued pressure will cause compression of the tube in a direction at right angles to the first compression so that the tube is forced into contact with the whole circumference of the wire, Fig. 6, and longitudinal ribs 9 are formed thereon. The middle of the sleeve 1 is indented at opposite sides to form abutments 4 for the ends of the wires while the ends 3 thereof are flared to facilitate entry and permit bending of the wires. In order to increase the tensile strength of the joint, the sleeve and wires may be bent during the compressing operation by forming one of the dies with a hump 15, Fig. 8, and the other die with two humps 16. The invention is also applicable to the connecting of overlapping wires and to the jointing of a wire to a hook, bolt, &c. The wires may be roughened prior to jointing.
