Abstract
327,049. Burgess, A. F., (Automatic Sprinkler Co. of America). May 11, 1929. Sprinklers, automatic.- A sprinkler system wherein air under pressure is maintained in the distributing pipes and in a control tubing, is provided with an air injector for maintaining automatically the air pressure in the pipes. A derangement alarm is provided. As shown, the system eomprises a main pipe 6, dry distributing pipes 8, 10 with fusible heads 16<1>, and a main valve 12 controlled by a tubing system 16 acting in known manner through a control chamber 14. The device 18 for maintaining the air pressure is connected to the pipe 8 by tubes 19, 19<a>, and to the chamber 14 by a tube 19<b>. The device comprises a pressure chamber within which is mounted an air injector 22 supplied with water from the main 6 by a pipe 20 under control of a valve 24. Air is drawn in through a tube 26 with a one-way valve 28. The valve 24 is operated by a lever 42, a tubular rod 48, and an annular float 44 arranged within the inner of two concentric chambers 52, 64 which communicate at their lower ends. The outer chamber 64 has an overflow to atmosphere at 66. In normal condition, the water stands at the level b in the inner chamber and at the overflow level a in the outer chamber. Should the air pressure in the piping 8 or 16 fall, owing, for example, to a leak, the float 44 rises and opens the valve 24. When the injector has re-established the air pressure, the float 44 sinks, and closes the valve 24. A second float 54 arranged within the float 44 carries a rod 56 adapted, if the float rises sufficiently, to engage and operate a lever @6 controlling a valve 34 in a pipe 38 connecting the pipe 20 to a watermotor alarm 40. Should the injector fail to reestablish the air pressure, or should it fail to operate at all, the float 54 rises sufficiently to open the valve 34, and an alarm is given. A pipe 41 leads from the discharge side of the main valve 12 to the water-motor, so that an alarm is given when the main valve opens.
