Fixed-chamber apparatus. - In an apparatus such as described in Specification 322,785 for dispensing predetermined quantities of liquid by causing the liquid to overflow to a delivery nozzle, a valve 8 controlling the liquid discharge passage 2, 13 is formed with a needle-like extension 11 to destroy any air pocket or bubble forming above the liquid and is fitted with a cork or other piston 7 which, on the valve being operated, produces a suction to accelerate the flow of the liquid. The apparatus shown is suitable for dispensing sufficient petrol for charging a petrol lighter or scent for a handkerchief on the insertion of a coin through a slot 33 in the cover 22. The liquid 5 to be dispensed is contained in an annular chamber 1 and preferably rests on a liquid 31 of higher specific gravity, which also fills a communicating central chamber 30 containing a float-pan 32. On the coin dropping into the pan 32 the liquid level rises, and when the valve 8 is operated the liquid overflows and issues at the nozzle 14. In order to prevent a syphoning action the movement of the piston uncovers an air vent 18 which may lead into the cover 22 or be provided with a vent hole or holes 17. The holes 17 may be arranged adjacent the wall of the chamber 1 or be guarded by a cowl or upstanding rods to prevent dishonest closure. The pan 32 is guided by arms 43 engaging the wall of the chamber 30, and on reaching the bottom of its travel a flange 36 on the pan engages a lever 38 and operates a lever 41 to close the coin slot 33. The cover 22 is secured to the wall of the chamber 1 by a bayonet connection 34, 35 and by a locking screw 23. A key for operating the locking screw 23 also operates the gland 9 of the valve 8 and the cap 21 of a filling connection 20 for the chamber 1.
