Abstract
326,757. Short, A. E., and Short, H. O. June 5, 1929. Divided on 327,060. Steering; skid; shock-absorbers, applications of. -The water rudder of an amphibian extends below the buoyant body and is spring mounted to act as a skid and is connected by a telescopic member to the means for actuating the air rudder. A light casting 1 having a, shoe 30 is provided with lugs 35, 36 to which a vertical tube 37 is secured, this tube being capable of turning and sliding in bearings 38, 39 on a member 40 secured to the stem of the buoyant body. A spring 41 surrounds the tube 37 between the bearing 38 and the lug 35 to take landing shocks, and a lighter spring 42, arranged inside the tube between an abutment therein and the closed end of a sleeve in the bearing 39, takes the rebound. The upper end of the tube 37 is connected by a universal joint 50 to a member 51 adapted to telescope in a member 52 of oval section which is connected by a second universal joint 53 to a tubular member 56 mounted in a bearing 57 on the fuselage. The member 56 has arms connected by wires 62 to the air rudder. Instead of being within the fuselage, as shown, the arms may be connected to the member 56 below the bearing 57. The rudder, instead of being cast, may be built up with two side plates riveted to spacing members to which the lugs 35, 36 are secured, and to a lower broadened member to which an additional shoe is. fixed.
