Abstract
325,856. Rheinische Kampfer-Fabrik Ges. Oct. 12, 1927, [Convention date]. Divided on 298,600. Thymol and its isomers; di-propyl and diisopropyl-m-cresols. - Thymol is produced by reacting m-cresol and propylene in the gaseous phase in presence of a dehydrating catalyst such as alumina, aluminium phosphate, and thorium and tungsten oxides, and they may be used alone or on carriers such as pumice, Kieselguhr, asbestos, silica gel and active charcoal; dried kaolin, brick clay, and highly porous materials such as Florida, fuller's, and silica earths, and the materials sold under the registered Trade Marks " Frankonit " and " Tonsil " (which are probably hydrosilicates of magnesium and aluminium) and also anhydrous zinc and magnesium chlorides, anhydrous acids and acid anhydrides, such as phosphoric and sulphuric acids, phosphoric anhydride, and mixtures of any of these substances may also be used. Instead of propylene, substances which are decomposed by the catalysts into propylene and water, such as propyl and isopropyl alcohols and ethers may be used. The propylene and cresol vapour may be passed over the catalyst at 200-380‹ C., and ordinary, increased, or diminished pressure may be employed. Besides thymol, two isomers (3- oxy-1-methyl-x-propyl or isopropyl benzene) melting at 69‹ C. and 112‹ C. and boiling at 228.5‹ C. and 245-246‹ C. are also produced. In an example, a mixture of m-cresol vapour and excess of propylene or half the equivalent quantity of propyl or isopropyl alcohol, or a quarter of the equivalent quantity of propyl or isopropyl ether over " Tonsil ' at a temperature above 230‹ C. The condensate is fractionated, the fractions being (1) unchanged m-cresol, (2) thymol isomer of melting-point 69‹ C., (3) thymol (which is purified by recrystallization from benzine), (4) thymol isomer of melting-point 112‹ C. and (5) a mixture of dipropyl di-isopropyl m-cresols boiling at about 260‹ C. At higher temperatures the yield of thymol decreases and the yield of dipropyl and di-isopropyl m-cresols increases. Specification 293,753 is referred to.
