Abstract

325,682. Fitzpatrick, H. D., (Berkel, C. F. M. van). Feb. 8, 1929. Anti-dazzle screens.-In anti-dazzle screens or blinds for the rear windows of motor-cars of the kind controlled by means arranged in proximity to the driver's seat, the controlling means include a retaining device which, when manually released, allows a spring or other positive actuating device to pull the blind into its operative and/or inoperative position. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the blind 9 is moved to an operative position covering the window 6 by means of a cord 12 attached at one end to the lower edge of the blind, and at the other end to a handle 16 which is depressed by the driver until it engages a locking recess 17a in a guide slot 17. When the handle 16 is disengaged from the recess the blind is returned to its non-operative position by an independent spring 18 or by a spring incorporated in the roller 10. In a modification the cord 12 pulls the blind to its uncovering position. In another modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the blind is operated in both directions, automatically, the cord 12 being connected to the rod 21 of a piston 23, which is slidable in a cylinder 22 enclosing a spring 25 and having ports 26, 27 at its ends. The port 26 is permanently connected to atmosphere, while the port 27 is connectible at the will of the driver, by operating a two-way valve 28, either to a pipe 29 leading to a source of suction, such as the induction pipe of the engine, or to a pipe 30 leading to atmosphere. The former connection causes the piston 23 to be drawn inwardly and the blind 9 to be pulled down, while the latter connection allows the springs 18, 25 to return the blind 9 and piston 23 to their normal positions.
