Openers and cleaners.-A machine for cleaning and opening cotton or other fibrous material and comprising a stationary conical cylinder C, Figs. 1 and 2, the lower part c<2> of which is perforated, inclined plates d arranged below the part c<2> to direct dirt and small fibre into a trough e containing a scroll or scraper f, the material being fed through a shoot b by a lattice a or like feed mechanism and the cleaned material being discharged from a tangential outlet i on to receiving, feeding down or forwarding mechanism, is characterized in that the conical cylinder C has a plain upper section c<1> and the beater consists of a shaft with bars h varying in length. More than one trough e may be provided. The upper half c<1> of the cylinder C is of sheet metal and is formed with two sections c' adapted to open about hinges c<4>. A well l having a hinged bottom l<1> and located adjacent to a corresponding opening in the part c<2> is provided to receive metal scrap or other heavy material. As shown, the material is delivered by centrifugal force on to a dust cage j arranged below a hood m and bearing on a driven roller k.
