Testing durability and hardness of materials.- Apparatus for testing the wearing qualities o tiles, wood-blocks. rubber mats, linoleum and similar floor coverings comprises means for apply ing a tapping or abrading action or both to the specimen. A base 1 has side plates 2 which ir turn support a table 3 provided with grooves 4 to receive the securing bolts of clamps 5 for the specimen 21. Under the table is a motor 6 driving through a worm reduction gear 7 a shaft 8 from which the drive is transmitted to a shaf 12 feathered on which are two cams 13, 14 which may or may not be formed in one. The inne: cam is adapted to impart movement to a rod 15 which in turn raises a beam 16 mounted on a pivot 17 and pulled downwards by tensioned springs 18. The beam 16 is provided with a hammer head 19 having a hardened point 20. The shape of the cam 14 is such that the beam is raised and suddenly dropped, the tile 21 receiving a sequence of blows. The number of taps per minute and the time taken to produce an indentation is a measure of the hardness. 'The tension of the springs 18 and the weight of the hammer head may be altered to vary the strength of a blow. For abrasive tests, a carrier 22 is attached to the hammer head having a spring pad 23 to which abrasive elements can be secured. The specimen is held by clamps 25 against a holder 26 and the cam 13 which gives a simple reciprocating action to the beam 16 is used. The loss of weight of the specimen in unit time per unit area affords a measure of the wearing property.
