Abstract

324,976. Dakin, P. W. H. Nov. 8, 1928. Tufting-machines.-A machine for making rugs by cutting off lengths of yarn from a colour-selecting device, pulling them through a backing fabric and knotting them, has a latch-needle, a looper, and means for moving the backing fabric progressively past the needle. The cops of yarn are carried on spools and pass through porcelain eyes 3 through tubes 5 on a rotatable disc 4 having teeth engaging a quadrant 7 with coloured discs 6. The disc 4 is rotated by the handle 8 to select the yarn of the desired colour. This is then pulled forward a given length by pincers 10 sliding on a carriage and cut by the blades 27, 9. Arms 55 operated by the rod 57 sliding bar 56 and a cam roll, press the cut yarn into the needle 43, Fig. 8, which pulls it through the fabric, spreads the loop, and returns to take the free ends from the looper 35 to pull them through the loop to knot the yarn firmly to the fabric, Fig. 10. The looper is given an elliptical motion by two arms following two cams. The driving shaft 11 is rotated from a pulley 492 by a friction drum 13, and the machine has a brakedrum 15 operated by a chain 16 attached to a treadle for quick stopping. The pincer carriage is reciprocated by the link 32 and barrel cam 34. The needle is fixed in a bar 48 and slides vertically in a horizontally moving slide 49 operated by links 51 and 490 operated in turn by a roll and cam on the main shaft. Specification 205,242 is referred to.
