Abstract

324,099. McClelland, T. Oct. 17, 1928. Records, magnetic; materials for; sound traces; records, combined phonograph and kinematograph.-Magnetic sound records comprise a track adapted to be magnetized in accordance with the sounds to be recorded and consisting of a substantially continuous belt of discrete particles embedded or enclosed in a matrix carried by or in a suitable carrier base. The base may be in the form of a ribbon or film of celluloid or metal, and the track may consist of steel filings or powder embedded in a matrix of celluloid or coliodion. The sound track may be affixed by pressing the moving base against a roller which is partially immersed in the matrix containing the magnetic particles, the sound track being forced to a certain extent into the base. Another method of attaching the track is to spray the matrix containing steel powder &c. on to the base. In another form, the base may be a ribbon of textile material which is impregnated with the matrix containing the magnetic element. The record may also be formed by blowing magnetic powder into the interior of a tube of textile material, applying celluloid solution, and flattening the tube. If desired, a plurality of parallel tracks may be applied to either or both of the faces of the base, and such tracks may be used either successively for recording lengthy matters on a strip by a lateral displacement at each end of the strip and continuation in the reverse direction on the next track, or so that each track may represent the simultaneous but separate record of different portions of an orchestral &c. rendering. In connection with combined sound and picture films, the magnetizable track and matrix are carried by the film. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of a metallic wire or a solution of iron as the magnetizable element.
