Materials, special; making building-blocks. - Boards or panels of compressed straw, reeds, or the like are formed by compressing the material in a mould a between pairs of longitudinal reinforcing wires d, the latter being tied together by hooks f passed through the material. An apparatus for engaging the hooks with wires comprises a forked slide 5 which is operated in a bed plate 4 to carry the hooks through the material, the mould a being formed with openings e for the passage of the slide. The slide carries towards its forward end a fixed member 9 and a member 8 which is pivoted at 10 and is held towards the member 9 by by a spring 11. In use, a hook is carried between the members 8, 9, the spring 11 yielding when the slide has penetrated the material to allow the hook to snap round the upper wire d. A pile of hooks is carried by a vertical bar 2, the lowest hook resting upon a tongue 13 when the slide 5 is in the mean position shown in Fig. 5. The tongue 13 is carried by a lever 15 which is pivoted at 16 and carries at its rear end a roll 17. Below the bed plate 4 is pivoted a member 20 which is profiled at its upper end 23 to form a continuation of the bar 2 and is urged into engagement with the slide 5 by a spring 22. When the slide 5 moves forwardly to insert the hook already in position between the members 8, 9, the roll 17 engages a cam slot 19 in the slide, allowing the tongue 13 to swing outwardly, so that the lowest hook on the bar 2 falls upon the slide 5. As the slide returns, the tongue moves in again, supporting the remaining hooks. When the slotted part 7 of the slide comes above the member 20, the latter can rise into prolongation of the bar 2, so that the separated hook is supported by its upper part 23. When the slide commences a new forward movement, the member 20 is moved downwardly by its engagement with the unslotted part of the slide, and the hook is carried forward by the members 8, 9.
