Abstract

323,260. Morton, J. Sept. 26, 1928. Chenille. - In making chenille and other fabrics, a number of aligned yarns &c. are simultaneously supplied, drawn off to the required lengths and cut, and the cut threads conveyed in parallel formation to transfer mechanism which presents them individually or otherwise to needles for incorporation as wefts in a fabric. In the apparatus shown in plan view in Fig. 4, used for making a preparatory cloth adapted to be cut up into strirs to form chenille wefts, coloured threads w<1> from bobbins pass through superposed apertures in the top ends of vertical selector rods 40, Figs. 1 and 4, which are all raised and then allowed to fall varying distances determined by stops 90 controlled by jacquard or other selecting mechanism. A number of differently-coloured yarns w<2> are thus presented in position to be engaged by the opened jaws 41, 42 of a gripper G, which slides on guides 51. When the gripper is forward near the selectors, the jaws are closed by spring action owing to the release of a latch 67 by the engagement of its trigger 68 with an adjustable abutment. The jaws clamp the presented threads w<2> and the gripper is then moved rearwards along the guides, thus drawing the yarns through the selectors out to the required lengths. Cam-controlled pressurebars 140, 141 now press the rear ends of the drawn out yarns into recesses in an endless chain 44. The selectors 40 are now lowered a short distance by lowering the stops 90 under cam control, so that the front ends of the selected yarns w<3> are pulled into recesses in an endless chain 43 and also into the spaces between teeth 173 across which cam-controlled knives 170 are slid whereby the yarns are cut. The gripper jaws are then opened by cam-controlled mechanism, so that the rear ends of the yarns w<3> are released. The sprocket wheels over which the endless chains pass are now rotated a step. The mass of cut parallel different-coloured yarns which has just been inserted between these endless chains 43, 44, which form a conveyer is thus' advanced a step. In due course the cut lengths of yarns are brought by the conveyer into position to be engaged by transfer mechanism such as the sinkers of a warp knitting machine K which move the wefts bodily against warps, and to knitting needles, whereby a fabric composed of these warps and wefts and rib warps is formed. There are several superposed spring-controlled stops 90 for each selector and after the selectors have been raised, one stop 90<a> for each selector is moved by its jacquard controlled cord 91 into position to engage a shoulder on the particular selector. Thus the descent of the various selectors is stopped at varying distances whereby after each selection a number of yarns of the required colours may be presented in position to be simultaneously engaged by gripper jaws. The fabric produced may be cut between the rib warps to make strips of chenille wefts either at once or be first wound up. Instead of a jacquard, a long chain actuating jack levers attached to stops may be used. The selectors are furnished with spring-controlled one way locking tumblers for the yarns. For plain fabrics, the yarns may be supplied en masse from a beam. The conveying device may comprise more than two chains. According to the Provisional Specification, the transfer mechanism may comprise an endless travelling band, or rotary discs or drums.
