Abstract
322,620. White, A. E., (Mississippi Glass Co.). Nov. 13, 1928. Rolling.-A method of making sheet-glass consists in flowing molten glass from a tank furnace to the pass between a pair of rollers in a thin stream of substantially the same width as the sheet to be formed, and in cooling one surface of the molten glass before it reaches the pass so as to stiffen the surface. Reinforcing wire may be fed into the molten glass, after the surface has been cooled, so that the stiffened surface supports the wire. The glass flows in a thin stream 1 over a wide spout 3 attached to a tank furnace 2, and it falls on to a watercooled roller 4 by which its lower surface is cooled. The glass is carried into the pass between the roller 4 and a second roller 5, and is formed into a continuous strip 30. A ball of glass, 6, is permitted to accumulate against the roller 5 to ensure a sufficient supply above the pass. Side strips 8 may be provided to keep the glass in position. As the stream 1 passes over the surface of the roller 4, a sheet 7 of wire fabric may be fed into the top surface of the glass as it passes into the ball 6. The wire is fed from a roll 7<1> downwards between watercooled shields 9, 10, so that it is prevented from oxidizing before it passes into the sheet and retains its bright polish. The sheet, after formation, passes over watercooled aprons 16, 19 into a leer and may be passed between rolls 17, 18 to impress a figured design on the surface. Watercooled shields 21, 22 may be provided to protect the rolls 5, 18 from the heat given out by the glass.
