Spring surfaces. - Vehicle seats, back rests, &c. comprise thin flexible blade springs a, Fig. 1, of loop form adapted to support a cover of leather, imitation leather, skin, felt, &c. and each secured to a stronger blade spring b mounted on a support d rigid with the frame of the vehicle, the deflection of the springs under shocks being free, but the rebound being damped. As shown, the spring a is secured to the free end of the spring b by a bent spring element a<1>, and the damping- means consists of two coil springs c, one on each side of the spring b and normally tangential to it, so as to assist the downward deflection (indicated by dotted lines) of the blade springs under shock, and to damp the return movement. In a modification, the damping is effected by additional blade springs. Thus, in the form shown in Fig. 14, comprising a flexible blade spring a and a strong blade spring u, the latter is connected by spring members v, v<1> to a blade spring y, with which may or may not be combined a blade spring w so arranged as to prevent the spring y from coming into contact with the central part of the spring u. A number of the spring systems described may be arranged approximately parallel, or in radiating relationship. Each spring system is connected at the front by a blade g and an adjustable clamp h to a pivotal clip f or other fastening device, these clips and similar clips f at the rear ends of the springs a being connected together by a wire i, or a beaded edging &c., bent to the contour of the seat.
