Abstract
322,417. Dreyfus, H. June 12, 1928. Fibres, stapling.-In the production of staple Fibre from artificial filaments or threads either continuously with their formation or when drawn from bobbins or other packages the filament is conveyed by a current of air or other fluid generated by a fan or impeller to a cutting-device operating in conjunction with the fan &c. The cutting-device may itself act as the fan. The cutting-device and the fan &c. may be driven by an electric motor or may be carried by the motor, and their speed is adjustable to suit the rate of production of the filament or to vary the length of staple produced. Suitable guides or supports such as driven rollers may be provided to diminish friction between the filament and the walls of the enclosing conduit. The filament is drawn along a conduit 6, Fig. 1, into a conduit 8 by a fan 12 mounted on a shaft 9. The shaft 9 is supported in bearings 10, 11 and also carries a cutting-device 14 comprising knives 15, which move past a stationary blade mounted round part of the edge of the orifice 7 from the conduit 6. The fan ejects the staple-fibres down a conduit 19 to any suitable receptacle. The device may comprise two tapered housings 21, 22, Fig. 3, enclosing a stationary conical piece 24 supported by radial webs 25 from the housing 21 and a rotary fan support 29 carried in bearings 27, 28. The support 29 carries a series of fan blades 30. The webs 25 carry a series of fixed blades and the fan blades 30 carry one or more blades to co-operate with them. The staple fibre is discharged down a conduit 34.
