Abstract

322,166. Streckfuss, E. G. Aug. 23, 1928. Cutting slices in succession.-In a machine of the disc-knife reciprocating carriage type, a substance tray is secured to a carriage mounted on guide-rods arranged in a trough, and a substance advancing plate is detachably mounted on guide-rods on the carriage; the machine may include also the knife-guards, knife-sharpening wheel, scrap tray, slice tray, and slice-adjusting plate, described below. In the machine shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 11, a carriage 9 is mounted on guide-rods 6 arranged in a trough 2 having the ends higher than the sides and provided with a detachable cover 4, the sides of the carriage passing through the gaps between the cover and the sides of the trough. The carriage is reciprocated by means of a handle 19. A substance tray 7 rests on the sides of the carriage and is secured by means of screws 9a which engage forks 7 on the tray. A substance-advancing plate 12 formed with spikes 13 is detachably mounted by means of a boss 15 and fork 16 on guide-rods 10, 11 on the carriage. The boss and fork are formed on arms 14 connected by a handle 17. A knife 28 geared by bevel-wheels to a motor 20 is arranged at a slight inclination to the path of the carriage and, except at the operative part, is covered at the front by a guard-plate 39, Fig. 7, which fits at one side within a shoulder on the knife. At the rear the knife is provided on the operative side with a guardplate 32, and on the other side and top with a guard-cover 32. The plate 32 is secured by screws 31 to a pedestal on which the knife is mounted, and the cover 32a is secured by screws 33, 34 to the pedestal, and by another screw to the base of the motor. The plate 39 is formed at the top with an offset 39a which is secured by screws 36 to the cover 32. A scrap tray 40 arranged below the knife is partly covered by a plate 41 having slots engaging lugs on an offset at the bottom of the plate 39. The motor is arranged at a slight inclination to the carriage on a raised part 20 of the base 1. A slice tray 61, Fig. 7 and 11, extending below the operative part of the knife is arranged between the part 20 and a raised part 60 supporting the motor switch. A knife-sharpening wheel is arranged in a boss 37 on the cover 32 and is revoluble on the shank of a screw 38 which is threaded into a detachable plate 38 and is employed to move the wheel into and out of contact with the knife. A slice-adjusting plate 55, Fig. 11, having a curved edge 59 adjacent to the knife is secured to a support 52 which is mounted on guide-rods 54 on a pedestal 45, a screw in engagement with the support being mounted on the pedestal and being turned by means of a knob 50 to adjust the support and plate. A casing 59 for the screw is secured to the support 52 and engages a guidepin 58, Fig. 7, on the pedestal. The pedestal is mounted on a vertical pin and can be turned to permit cleaning of the plate. The pedestal is secured by engagement of studs 47 with holes in a flange 45.
