Rolling-machines.-Relates to apparatus for sheeting plastic confectionery material, and more particularly for spreading jam, cream, or the like, on to wafer, cakes, or other foodstuffs. The material 1 is taken from a hopper 2 by a pair of rolls 3, 4, which form with a roll 5, substantially touching the roll 4, a chamber 13 in which the material is compressed either because the space between the rolls 3, 4 exceeds the space between the rolls 3, 5 or because the peripheral speed of one or both of the rolls 3, 4 exceeds that of the roll 5. A scraper 6, having a short concave face ending in a sharp-edged recess, which ensures that the material will leave the scraper, is arranged to remove the sheet from the roller and deposit it on a wafer 14 on the conveyer 15. A scraper .7, having a sharp edge on each side to break the contact with the substance, is pivotally mounted to engage either with the roller 3, as shown in Fig. 3, or with the roller 5, in which case the material returns with the roller 3 to the hopper. The rollers 3, 4 may be roughened or grooved to grip the material, and the roller 3 is journaled in a frame pivoted about the axis of the roll 4 so that the space between the rolls 3, 5 is variable by screws 44. The rolls 3, 4 are geared together and the rolls 4, 5 are driven by worms on a vertical shaft carrying a friction disc 36 which is slidable thereon to vary the speed of the rolls. The friction disc 35 is slidable on the driving pulley shaft and is moved into contact with the disc 36, to start the machine, by means operated by the handle 46, rod 39 and crank 56. The conveyer 15 is trained over a drum driven by worm gearing 19, 20 and variable-speed friction discs 16, 17. The shaft of the roller 18 carries cams, one of which actuates the extension 39a of the rod 39 to stop the machine, and the other raises an adjustable swinging fence 27 which retains the wafer until it is correctly positioned on the conveyer 15, and then rises to allow it to pass. The lever 25 of the scraper 7 is oscillated by a cam plate 23 which is reciprocated by a cam on the shaft of the roller 18. The duration of the dwell of the scraper 7 on the rollers 3, 5, and consequently the length of the cream sheet deposited on the goods, is regulable. In operation, the attendant pushes the handle 46 and starts the machine, the roller 18 revolves once, the scraper 7 and rolls 3, 4, 5 apply a coating to one wafer and the machine is automatically stopped. The machine is restarted for another cycle of operations by pushing the handle 46. The rollers may be heated electrically or otherwise. Specification 321,414 is referred to.
