Vermin-destroying compositions. - Mercurized aromatic hydrocarbons or certain substitution products thereof are employed (a) diluted with a dry carrier such as kieselguhr or talcum or in aqueous solution or emulsion, for immunizing grain, and' (b)'in aqueous solution or emulsion or dissolved in organic solvents such as tar oils or alcohols, for disinfecting or preserving wood. The aqueous products may be prepared by the use of solution promoting substances such as sodium carbonate, hydrate or phosphate, borax or phenol alkali salts or by preparing colloidal solutions in known manner by the use of colloids such as glue, dextrin or gelatine. Examples of the active ingredients used are phenyl mercuric acetate, tolyl mercuric acetate, naphthalene mercuric acetate, parachloro phenyl mercuric acetate, the mercurized compounds of nitro benzene, para-anisyl mercuric acetate and substitution products containing carboxyalkyl, sulphanilide or carboxyanilide groups. Other salts than acetates, for example halides, nitrates, cyanides, complex cyanides or chromates may be employed. The mercurized compounds may be used in conjunction with other active ingredients such as arsenious acid or phenyl arsine oxide. Examples of compositions for carrying out the invention are (a) a mixture of 4 parts by weight of phenyl mercuric acetate and 96 parts of talc for treating wheat; (b) a solution of 10 grams of sodium nitrophenol and 2 grams of phenyl mercuric acetate in 100 litres of water for treating wood. Examples of mercurized aromatic hydrocarbons substituted by (a) carboxyalkyl, (b) sulphanilide or (c) carboxyanilide groups are (a) the compound prepared by isolating the precipitate obtained from a mixture of ethyl-4-amino-benzoate containing a nitrite, corrosive sublimate, hydrochloric acid and water, suspending it in acetone, treating with metallic copper, filtering and crystallizing, and subsequently recrystallizing from alcohol; (b) p-toluene sulphon-aniline mercury acetate, prepared by condensing a solution of aniline mercury acetate in pyridine with ptoluene sulphochloride at about 40‹ C.; the compound prepared by condensing the sulphochloride of salicylic acid with aniline mercuric acetate in the same manner; (c) the compounds prepared by condensing the chloride of oxalic acid or the chloride of benzoic acid with aniline mercury acetate in the manner indicated in (b).
