Abstract

321,288. Hailey, A. J., Hailey, H. J., and Glanville, W. H. Sept. 29, 1928. Kinematograph apparatus. - Apparatus for taking a series of photographs of a moving subject comprises means for intermittently rotating the camera so that its field continues to include the subject, means for taking one or more photographs in each position of the camera, and means for subsequently returning the camera to its initial position. A cam 50, Fig. 5, is adapted to rotate the socket 54 into which a stem 57 projecting from the underside of the camera 10 is inserted. A spring 60 effects the automatic return of the camera to its initial position. The camera mechanism is operated by the rotation of a camera shaft 8 driven through bevel gearing 29 by the shaft 28, Fig. 5. A spindle 15 coupled to the motor 9 (shown in Fig. 2) has a sliding sleeve 21 normally held away from the shaft 28 by a spring 23 but having a clutch device 25 adapted to engage and drive it when brought into action by the bell-crank lever 36, 38, which is periodically operated by the cam 40. A tappet 42, 43, between the arm 38 and the cam 40 is moved up and down by a further cam 44 and rocking arm 46; when in the upper position the enlarged portion 42 causes the cam to operate the clutch, a series of exposures thus being made; when in the lower position, the narrow neck 43 makes the cam 40 ineffective, the cam 50 then rotating the camera to the next position. The cams 40, 44 and' 50 are driven by the motor 9 and are timed so that a desired number of exposures are made whilst the camera is at rest in each position. Automatic focussing is effected by a radial arm projecting from the lens mount and engaging between the arms of a fork fixed to the support 13. Movement of the camera causes rotation of the lens mount and adjusts the focus. Means are provided for switching on the motor by hand or by a coin-freed device and for automatically switching off when the cycle operations is completed. The mechanism may include means for automatically switching the lights into and out of circuit. The subject may control the operations by walking over switches which complete circuits operating stops or clutches adapted to delay further operations of the mechanism until the subject reaches the points in his path at which the switches are placed.
