Surface and out line gauges. - Ap paratus for measur ing the distance between the root of the nose and the chin so that the height of the bite may remain un changed when an artificial denture is fitted comprises two rods 1, 2 con nected at the hot tom by a fixed bar 4 and at the top by a fixed bar 3 carry ing a holder 5 for wax which is pressed against the root of the nose whilst warm and is then cooled and hardened. A bar 6 sliding on the rods 1, 2 and adjustable by means of a screw 20 carries a chin contact piece 9 comprising a part 10 engaging the front of the chin, and an oblique part 11, which is horizontally adjustable with reference to the part 10 and adapted to be clamped in adjusted position. The parts 10, 11 are each convex towards the chin. The whole chin piece is resiliently mounted on the bar 6 and an index mark and scale are provided so that an equal degree of compression may be obtained at each application to the patient. A C-spring 22 holds the bar 6 in contact with the end of the screw 20. An additional attachment consists in an adjustable contact piece 30 for the edges of the upper incisors ; this slides on the rod 2 but engages the rod 1 by means of a spring 28<c> so that it may be disengaged from the rod 1 and swung round the rod 2 so as to be away from the face if not required for use.
