Abstract
320,078. Robinson & Co., Ltd., A., Gill, J. F., and Chaviara, J. N. May 31, 1928. Order apparatus.-In an electric signalling system of the type in which orders are transmitted by means of a potentiometer at the transmitting station adapted to influence an electric motor operating a balancing potentiometer at the receiver, reply apparatus of a similar nature is provided to enable received signals to be acknowledged. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, orders are transmitted by manual adjustment of the potentiometer l at the transmitting station A to cause current flow in the field winding w of the motor at the receiving .station B and consequent operation of the motor to adjust the potentiometer l<1> at the receiver until the balance point is reached. Orders received are acknowledged by manual adjustment of the potentiometer l at the receivers to control the motoroperated potentiometer l<1> at the transmitter. The potentiometers at the transmitter and receiver are connected in parallel and in series with the armatures v of the motors. The apparatus at each station is similar and is shown in Fig. 3. The adjustable contacts m, m' associated with the transmitting and receiving potentiometers a.re respectively carried by a sleeve n and a shaft n<1> which is geared to the motor p. The sleeve also carries a disc g having contact rings r, s, t. A contact u driven by the motor co-operates with the rings r, t and rings s, tare connected to the supply mains through bushes 2, 5. On moving the sleeve n to transmit an order, the armature circuit of the motor is closed over the contact u by displacement of the disc q, and upon acknowledgment of the order the motor p operates the contact u to again open the circuit at the gapped portions of the rings r, t. Magnetic blow-out coils 4 may be provided in association with the contact rings. To ensure instantaneous stoppage of the motor when the armature circuit is opened a brake x controlled by a spring y is applied to a drum 7 on the motor shaft. The brake is released by a solenoid z connected in series with the armature. Racing of the motor is prevented by a fan 6. The electrical equipment of the system is arranged in any convenient position where it can be protected and operation is effected from a distance through the medium of chains, wires, &c. by telegraph apparatus of known type. As shown in Fig. 1, the electrical equipments e, g at the transmitter and receiver are connected respectively to the order telegraph transmitter a and the receiving and reply-back instrument k by wires &c. b, i. The Provisional Specification states that the armature may be connected in parallel with the potentiometers and the brake for the motor shaft may be controlled by a solenoid in series with the field circuit. Specifications 13874/05; and 6424/14, [Class 38 (iii), Electric motor control systems &c.], are referred to.
