Abstract

319,711. Keay, R. W. June 27, 1928. Engines with main shaft parallel to axis of cylinder; driving-gear. - A portable drilling- machine having a fluid-pressure actuated engine of the swash-plate type has a ring of gear teeth on the swash-plate which roll round a bevel gear on the drill-spindle to rotate it at a lower speed. A crank-shaft is also rotated by the swash-plate and serves to drive a rotary valve for controlling admission of fluid to the cylinders. A cylindrical casting 1 has four parallel bores 2 forming the cylinders for pistons 7 connected by ball-ended rods 9 to the swash-plates 11. Rotation of the swash-plate is prevented by blocks 15, Fig. 3, attached by screws 14 to the swash-plate and sliding in arcuate guides 16 carried by covers 17 inserted into diametrically opposite slots in the casing 1. A ring of gear teeth 12, Fig. 1, on the swash-plate rolls on a bevel gear 18 attached to the drill-spindle 19 and rotates the drill at one sixth of the speed of its own oscillation, but this velocity ratio may be modified and additional gearing may be provided for giving a wider range of velocity ratios. The drill-spindle is rotatably secured in the cover 22 of the casing 1 by a gland 26, a metal ring 25, a thrust collar 23 and a ball bearing 24. A single throw crank shaft 13 is rotatably mounted in the swash plate and also at 28 and 29 in the drill-spindle and a central boss 3 of the casing 1 respectively. The upper end of the crank shaft carries a key 30 lying in a semicircular recess in a valve 5 rotatably mounted in a liner 4. A knurled flange 42 on the valve allows the latter to be rotated by hand relatively to the crank-shaft and cause the key 30 to engage one end or the other of the semi-circular recess and thus determine the direction of rotation of the engine. Motive fluid is admitted from one side of the casing 1, through a port in the liner 4, to an annular recess 36 in the valve and thence by a port 37, Fig. 4, and ports in the liner to each cylinder in turn. Exhaust takes place from ports 39, 38 in the cylinders and liner and a recess 40 in the valve, to atmosphere.
